- Outdoor area with access to full sunlight and shadows
- Cup of water
- Paintbrush
- Timer
- Electronic device (tablet or computer for videos and interactive games)
- Vocabulary cards and images
- Materials to make Ddakji squares (paper, scissors, markers)
Background:
The Sun provides the energy that drives the evaporation of water on Earth. Water evaporating from oceans is fresh, as the salts are left behind. The majority of the water cycle begins when the Sun’s energy evaporates water from the oceans, which cover roughly 71% of Earth’s surface.
Evaporation, condensation, and precipitation continuously cycle water throughout the environment, supporting life and connecting Earth systems. This lesson incorporates hands-on experiments, interactive multimedia, and cultural integration to deepen understanding.
Engage (20-30 mins):
Activity: Shadows and Evaporation
Students will explore if sunlight affects the rate of evaporation:
- Place a cup of water in direct sunlight and another in the shadow.
- Use a timer to track how quickly the water evaporates.
- Students respond to prompts in their journals:
- What happened to the water?
- Why do you think the water evaporated faster in the sunlight than in the shadow?

Steps:
- Vocabulary cards and images are placed face up.
- Students create Ddakji squares using paper. Guide to making Ddakji
- Students place cards beneath their Ddakji squares.
- Take turns flipping opponents’ Ddakji by striking it with their own squares.
- Students match flipped squares with correct vocabulary terms.
- Students with the most flipped cards win.

- Flipping Ddakji demonstrates energy transfer, reinforcing the concept of Sun’s energy driving water movement.
