Objectives

  • Students will create a model of the water cycle and use it to describe the cycle.
  • Students will explain how the Sun and the ocean interact in the water cycle.
  • Students will analyze how mountains in Korea affect the water cycle in that region.
  • Students will apply their knowledge of the water cycle during the Korean traditional game, Yutnori.

Background

The water cycle describes the movement of water within the Earth and its atmosphere. Key processes include:

  • Evaporation: Sun’s heat causes water to evaporate from oceans, lakes, and streams.
  • Transpiration: Water from plants enters the atmosphere.
  • Condensation: Water vapor rises and forms clouds.
  • Precipitation: Water returns to the surface as rain, snow, or hail.
  • Surface water & Groundwater: Some precipitation runs off into rivers, lakes, and oceans, while some seeps into the ground as groundwater. (Climate Kids, n.d.; USGS Science for a Changing World, n.d.)

Materials

  • Hot plate
  • Plastic cups
  • Water, ice
  • Beaker
  • Plastic container, plastic wrap
  • Zip-lock bags, rubber bands
  • Pencil, lab sheets, paper, colored pencils
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Chromebook
  • Timer

Engage: Think-Pair-Share (20–30 mins)

Evaporation Demonstration

  1. Heat water in a beaker on a hot plate until steam appears.
  2. Students discuss with a partner for 2 minutes and draw observations.
  3. Use popsicle sticks to call on students to share partner discussions.

Condensation Demonstration

  1. In groups, place hot water in a clear plastic cup and invert it on another cup.
  2. Place an ice cube on top of the cup.
  3. Students observe, draw, and share what they see for 2 minutes.

Explore: Create a Water Cycle Model (45–60 mins)

Objective: Students will model how precipitation forms from the Sun’s energy and water.

Instructions

  1. Pour room temperature water into a plastic container (¼ full).
  2. Cover with plastic wrap and secure with a rubber band.
  3. Place 2–3 ice cubes in a zip-lock bag on top of the wrap.
  4. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Students answer pre-lab questions:
    • What are the states of matter for water?
    • Predict what will happen to the plastic wrap.
  5. After 15 minutes, students observe, sketch the model, and reflect on predictions.

Explain (20–30 mins)

  • Students connect observations from Engage and Explore to the water cycle.
  • Teacher guides students through a Google Slides interactive notebook foldable.
  • Vocabulary and concepts (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, transpiration) are connected to their observations.
  • Students complete notebook foldables with examples from daily life or cultural contexts.

Elaborate: Multicultural Connection

Activity: How Do Mountains Affect the Water Cycle in South Korea?

  1. Students research the effects of mountains on precipitation and evaporation.
  2. Create a 5-slide Google Slides presentation linking the water cycle to one selected mountain.
  3. Popular mountains for study: Hallasan, Seoraksan, Jirisan, Bukhansan, Taebaeksan, Gwanaksan.

Cultural Relevance:
Students integrate local geography and science content, making the lesson meaningful and contextually relevant.


Evaluate: Yutnori – Water Cycle Edition

  1. Students play a modified version of the Korean traditional game, Yutnori.
  2. Throw yut sticks to move across the board; where they land, they must answer a water cycle question.
  3. Correct answers earn 1 point. Goal: return to START.
  4. If time is limited, the student/group with the most points wins.
