Preface
The purpose of this open textbook is to support pre- and in-service teachers in developing culturally responsive instructional practices and cultural competence so they can effectively teach all students, including culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners. Cultural Science Night was designed as a collaborative learning experience that brings together educators and cultural experts to create meaningful, inclusive science learning opportunities.
This textbook is organized around two interconnected components. The first component provides cultural knowledge of China, India, Korea, and Mexico. The second component focuses on culturally responsive science instruction created for the Cultural Science Night event, an occasion in which teachers present hands-on, culturally responsive science activities in collaboration with students.
By creating opportunities for teachers to interact with diverse cultures and collaboratively design instruction, this textbook contributes to the continuous improvement of science education. It promotes equitable learning opportunities for all students, particularly CLD learners, and supports their engagement and academic success in science classrooms.
In the long term, this textbook serves as a resource for educators and administrators seeking to integrate multicultural perspectives into curriculum and instruction. By centering the needs and strengths of ethnically diverse students, it enhances educators’ understanding of cultural diversity, expands access to high-quality science learning for CLD students, and supports their academic achievement. Ultimately, this work aims to help schools foster inclusive learning environments and prepare students to thrive in an increasingly diverse and global society.
