Part I Fundamentals of U.S. Surface Transportation

The first section of this book establishes a foundation for the understanding of transportation policies, programs, and history in the United States and basic transportation concepts. Chapters One and Four discuss federal legislative history, including major transportation funding acts and Presidential executive orders focused on equity. Chapters Two and Three present the major phases of developing transportation projects from concept to operation and maintenance. Chapter Four deals with the importance of equity in transportation, paramount to all activities and phases of developing a transportation project. Part I aims to help the student learner integrate fundamental transportation knowledge with the specific transportation planning topics presented in Parts II and III, such as public transit, technology, and sustainability.
