There is tremendous growth expected in electric demand for the next 25 years in the United States, a significant shift from the last 15 years, which experienced almost no growth. Most of the new demand comes from data centers supporting Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency. Additional growth stems from the electrification of refineries and expansion of manufacturing.
This surge in demand presents particular challenges for generation, especially in accommodating large loads from a single interconnection that can simultaneously turn off and on – jolting the grid. This book outlines the opportunities, the challenges, and potential solutions for generating the power required to support these new large-scale demands, particularly those in the hundreds of megawatts (MW) to gigawatts (GW).
