10.6 Exercises

  • Select a topic on which you could prepare a speech of explanation, description, or demonstration. Using the mind-mapping technique described in the outlining module, create a map of the main ideas and sub-ideas you would include. Also be sure to list particular words, language strategies (such as the use of metaphor), and descriptive words that you think are important to help achieve the speech objective.
  • Combine and apply: Deliver a one-minute impromptu special occasion speech. To deliver the impromptu, first identify the occasion for which you will pretend to speak and then think about the specific points you wish to make for the type of special occasion. Then, deliver the presentation in class for your classmates, and remember to also ensure aspects of strong delivery like poise, eye contact, and use of voice.
  • Brainstorm any topical area for a presentation and decide who your audience will be. Then, on a blank page in any format, complete the following to apply the concepts outlined above. Once you’re done, review and determine the overall approach you would use to design your presentation. For your topic and considering your audience identify: The general and specific purpose, the demographic and psychological characteristics of your audience, the type of audience you will speak to, and important situation and context factors. Given these answers, which of the persuasive appeals will you use?
