Hoy en día el español es una lengua global que cuenta con unos 500 millones de hablantes nativos. Español práctico: introducción al estudio de la lengua española es un Recurso Educativo Abierto (REA) que explora la historia, la estructura y la diversidad de esta lengua global. El libro provee al alumno una introducción al estudio del español como sistema lingüístico e incluye temas como el desarrollo del español como lengua global, los sonidos y la ortografía de la lengua, la estructura de las palabras y las oraciones, la variación y el contacto de lenguas. El libro sirve de puente entre los cursos de lengua y los cursos avanzados de lingüística, sin abrumar al estudiante con todos los detalles científicos de la disciplina. A lo largo de los seis capítulos, se mantiene una finalidad didáctica práctica: se presenta la información de manera interactiva y se le invita al estudiante a aplicar sus conocimientos lingüísticos a contextos específicos, por ejemplo, en el uso del español en diversas profesiones, niveles sociales, regiones dialectales, etc.

This textbook and OER material cover tools and basic knowledge required to master the prerequisite essentials of physics, mathematics, and statistics applied in transportation engineering. To our knowledge, no such textbook currently exists to build the KSTs (Knowledge, Skills, Tools) for college freshmen’ remedial courses required by most transportation engineering graduate programs that admit non-engineers (e.g., PHYS 141, MATH 142, STAT 321 at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo). The textbook modules are intended for students with undergraduate degrees in planning and other less technical fields who are interested in pursuing transportation careers where background engineering knowledge is required.

This textbook is a product of the grant OERTransport: Enabling Transportation Planning Professional Advancement awarded to the University of Texas-Arlington (UTA) in consortium with California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) and the University of South Florida (USF). OERTransport Multimodal Transportation Planning introduces readers to the principles and practice of integrated land use and transportation planning. The primary focus of the textbook is on planning for the mobility needs of all transportation system users, with an emphasis on pedestrian, bicycle, automobile, and transit modes while reducing society’s dependence on the automobile for personal travel.

Providing individuals with a choice of clean, efficient, and affordable mobility options is a key strategy for reducing the effects of climate change, improving public health and safety, and achieving more equitable and livable communities. To address these policy objectives, students are expected to have a working knowledge of multimodal transportation planning in contemporary practice. In response, graduate urban planning and engineering programs are beginning to address multimodal transportation planning and sustainable transportation in their curricula. This textbook provides Universities with a practical resource for use in teaching multimodal transportation planning and related courses in graduate-level urban planning and engineering programs. OERTransport Multimodal Transportation Planning has been described as a “Great way to present the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of transportation.”

Readers of the text will be able to gain knowledge on a variety of key themes and objectives toward an understanding of the relationship between land use and transportation, the difference between traditional methods and multimodal planning best practices, and the importance of evaluating performance from an accessibility and quality of service perspective.

This textbook and OER material cover tools and basic knowledge required to prepare transportation engineers and planners to contribute towards a carbon-neutral mobility future. In addition, we will explore the potential for vehicle electrification, automation, connectivity, and ridesharing to reduce the carbon impacts of auto mobility.  The textbook modules are intended to inform and teach students how to design streets for modes that have almost no carbon emissions. The goal of the textbook is to train engineering students on existing tools and policy levers that can be used to incorporate emerging transportation technologies in a sustainable, equitable, and efficient manner. The course is designed for graduate transportation engineering, and city and regional planning students. The undergraduate seniors will be able to absorb the materials given they have already taken fundamental courses on transportation engineering and planning, including traffic engineering and highway design.

A guide to the historical profession appropriate for use in an undergraduate Historical Methods course. The goal for this book is that those who read it will learn how to do well in history courses by developing the ability to read, research, and write according to the standards established in our discipline. Becoming familiar with how historians customarily approach questions about the past–as well as learning to how to read critically, research efficiently, build strong arguments based on evidence, and write with clarity–are the lessons that will give history students not only a leg-up in their history courses, but provide important, marketable skills useful in other courses and in many careers (some of which are highlighted within the text). The main lesson gained from reading this book is that within the professional discipline of history there are standards for research and writing about the past.

Contributors to this open textbook offer relatable descriptions, details, and contexts of artworks from around the world, which have often been relegated to the peripheries of art and social history. Art traditions from Africa, Oceania, South and Southeast Asia, Islamicate regions, East Asia, and the indigenous Americas (before colonization) are prioritized to challenge the long-held view that “real art” only comes from the West. Introductory discussions of the history of art history and geographic conventions set the stage for considering the larger question, “where does art come from,” and other questions such as, “why haven’t I heard much about art from Africa, Oceania, etc.?” This book takes a pluralistic approach, forefronting diversity and interconnectedness. Scholars and students collaborated to produce this book. Student contributions will continue to improve the text and interactivity as it evolves. A scavenger hunt of student-made “easter eggs” builds a thread of engagement and humor throughout the book.
